Originally from
Louisiana, Ms. Lawler currently resides in New Mexico’s
mountains in the USA. She also lived and worked in New York City
for 20 years. Universities attended were Louisiana State
University/Baton Rouge, LA (BFA degree in sculpture),
Parson’s/NYC, and New York University/NYC. Harriette has
founded/directed two non-profit artists’ cooperatives: Matters
of the Art in Baton Rouge/New Orleans and currently Art Jemez in
New Mexico. In addition to originating the concepts and
coordinating the events for those groups, she curated their
exhibits. Working as an independent curator outside NM, her
latest project was the international show “Corrections” in San
Francisco in 2009 with associate Frank Ettenberg of Vienna. Her
magazine work in design includes Rolling Stone, The Village
Voice, and Popular Mechanics, winning several American Design
awards.
Harriette’s work relates to the changing mental, spiritual, and
emotional landscapes that we traverse in life. Spaces are
defined to convey a particular realm of existence, quest, moment
in time, or saga. Pieces are often cut from one flat sheet of
metal, torched, and then the sculpture pulled out into a 3D
work. This process produces a fluid and often musical quality,
which transforms the metal’s natural rigidity. Most works
represent passages through hardships or transitions. Such images
as doorways, ladders, and windows are often utilized. However,
in some work, the calmness and harmony achieved after these
difficult transits are expressed. In particular, her
Arcs/Restrung Bows series portray that “aftermath.” The
influence of her Native American heritage is strongly reflected
in these works. Inspired by her late Indian father’s old hunting
bow, which hangs in her studio, these works are “bows” that have
been reshaped and restrung in unorthodox fashion to “play”
visual songs.
